Wayne Webb wrote "finis" to his 1983 season with a championship performance that netted him his second Brunswick Memorial World Open title in the last six years, plus the $23,000 first prize. He captured the $150,000 event from Steve Cook, runnerup for the second straight year, with a 194-191 championship victory at Brunswick Northern Bowl. In the opening matches Ted Hannahs eliminated Joe Berardi, 213-211, but fell to Cook, 208-191. Cook, down 37 pins after only three frames against Norm Duke, then rallied to win, 199-169, to earn a second consecutive shot at the rich championship. The prize fund had been increased from $110,000 to $150,000 only four days prior to the tournament, with the U.S. Olympic Committee benefiting by a $15,000 contribution in honor of the participants.
