Joe Salvemini, who fell behind big Steve Cook with a 16-pin deficit early In the title game, came from behind to win his second title of the year, topping Cook, 231-191, to win the $100,000 Syracuse Open. The $13,000 first prize also proved to be an early wedding present as he married In December. Salvemini pulled himself together with a five-bagger starting in the fifth frame, and, despite a closing double by Cook, he was home free with the victory. For a time it looked as though Cook, the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Californian, would win It all. He started by ousting Mike Durbin, 232-225, then eked out a 199-188 victory over Gary Skidmore and John Forst, 203-195. Those victories earned him a shot at the title game and Salvemini, but to no avail.
