Brian Voss squandered his first opportunity to capture the $13,000 top prize in the $100,000 Greater Detroit Open, but he didn't waste a second chance, defeating Houston's Pete McCordic in a two-frame overtime roll-off, 39-29, to capture his first title. Following a strike on his first ball In the 10th, Voss left the 4-10 split and picked up only the four-pin to settle for a 176 tie. In a rare roll-off for the championship, McCordic, still looking for his first PBA title after 11 years on tour, left the 1-2-4-10 "washout" and failed to convert. Voss responded with a strike, spare and nine count for 39, leaving McCordic three strikes shy of another tie. But McCordic missed again, leaving the 1-2-4 and Voss on top. Bruce Carter opened the finals by defeating two-time PBA champion Gary Skidmore, 202-190, and eliminating 10-time champ Tommy Hudson, 220-205. Voss then stepped in to edge Carter, 199-198.
