George Pappas, in a "gutsy" display of pinpoint bowling, won the $110,000 Kessler Classic by upending leading qualifier Marshall Holman, 195-191, to capture the $15,000 first prize and his eighth PBA title. Pappas was the third in the qualifying, and he waited one game until Steve Wunderlich ousted Paul Gibson In the first game, 269-225. Pappas then swung into action and administered knockout drops to Wunderlich, 265-216, and Tom Baker, 242-217, to set the stage for the championship match.
