Pete Couture won the $110,000 Kessler Open the hard way. First, he came from behind to wins two-frame roll-off over veteran Larry Laub, and then he upset top qualifier Marshall Holman in the championship match, 211-186, to claim the $15,000 first prize and the Kessler championship trophy. For a time it looked as though Laub, whose last title oddly enough came in 1979 when he won the Kessler Classic at Battle Creek, Mich., would win again. He first defeated Ray Shackelford, 221-204, and then eliminated Alvin Lou, 205-187. In the overtime roll-off (9th and 10th frames), Couture struck, Laub spared and then struck out for 50 pins. That left it up to Couture, who rolled three more pressure-packed strikes to total 60 and earn the title shot.
