Hugh Miller's record in championship round performances remained unblemished as he advanced from second place in the finals to capture the $100,000 Tucson Open for his third PBA title. Miller toppled tournament leader Bob Handley, 237-224, for the $13,000 first prize. Handley had never lost from the top-qualifier position, but it was Miller who prevailed in this battle of "unbeatens." Miller's TV record is 5-0, dating back to 1980. In the opening game, Mike Aulby topped Steve Cook, 216-188, before falling to Jim Poulos, 258-249. In another high-scoring affair, Miller downed Poulos, 257-241, and established the championship match-up.
