Bob Handley gave himself a fitting birthday present, albeit one day late, by capturing the $100,000 Houston Open and $13,000 winner's check. He earned his third PBA title with a 248-204 championship game triumph against Ray Shackelford by striking on seven of his f first eight shots. Shackelford was appearing in his second ever championship round and defeated two opponents before falling victim to "Hookin' Handley's" explosive strike ball. In the opening match, Jimmie Pritts Jr., celebrated the birth of his son two days earlier by defeating Dean Asami, 210-160, before falling to Shackelford, 221-157. Shackelford continued to advance and topped Mark Baker, 224196.
