Joe Salvemini, under Intense pressure after nearly blowing himself out of the championship match with a missed seven pin, recovered coolly with three game-ending strikes to win the $125,000 Rolaids Open. Victim of Salvemini's closing onslaught was veteran Johnny Petraglia, who left a 4-7-10 split when a double was needed in the 10th frame. The result was a 206-200 victory for Salvemini, his first PBA national title and the $20,000 first-place check. In the opening game Bruce Carter tangled with defending Rolaids champ Bill Straub, and Straub won, 237-202. Straub just couldn't get untracked against Marshall Holman, however, and Holman rolled to an easy, 232-164, victory. Holman then bowed to Petraglia, 234-225.
