It will be a long time before Toby Contreras, fans in Mel's Southshore Bowl, PBA officials and millions of television viewers forget Contreras' performance in the $135,000 AC-Delco Classic. The 25-year-old "jumping bean" from Kansas City contorted himself into a PBA championship with a come-from-behind victory over Charlie Tapp, S. St. Paul, Minn., to win the $23,000 first prize, 221-212. In the preliminary matches Phil Ringener, Butch Soper, Palmer Fallgren and Tapp battled for the right to meet Contreras for the title. Soper was the early favorite, ousting Ringener, 279-225. Soper then failed against Tapp, who had a 279 to Soper's 212. Tapp next toppled Fallgren, 232-223, setting the stage for the title game.
