Steve Fehr, who had been knocking on the door for his first PBA title throughout much of the season, saw his persistence pay off with a hard-earned victory in the $110,000 Kessler Classic in Indianapolis. Fehr, a PBA member for just 14 months, scraped and clawed his way from fourth place to the $15,000 top prize, defeating four opponents by a combined total of 27 pins, including a 184-183 championship game decision against Earl Anthony. Prior to that, Fehr had slipped by Marshall Holman, 196-192; Ted Hannahs, 214-196; and Roger Haskell, 205-201. In a back and forth title game in which neither player could take control, Fehr stepped up for the 10th frame needing a strike plus at least eight pins and a spare for the victory. He got exactly what was called for, converting a 2-5 spare after the initial strike to thwart Anthony's bid for his 40th PBA title.
