George Pappas, who had a dismal 1-11 championship-round record since his 1979 victory in the Firestone Tournament of Champions, downed four straight opponents to capture the $130,000 AC-Delco Classic championship in Torrance, Calif. Pappas, the president of the PBA, defeated Pete Weber easily in the first game before coming up with a necessary 10th frame double to edge Gil Sliker by three pins in the second match. After breezing past Wayne Webb, the 35-year-old Pappas began the championship match against Charlie Tapp with two open frames and trailed by 31 pins. The challenging Pappas then put together a three-bagger to pull within eight pins, doubled to take the lead and solidified his seventh tour victory with a strike in the 10th frame. Pappas made $21,000 for the effort while Tapp, a runnerup for the second time in 1982, collected $11,000.
