Pete Couture emerged with his fourth PBA championship after opponent Joe Berardi left a solid 10-pin in the final frame of the title game in the $110,000 King Louie Open. Couture took the decision, 240-222, but Berardi could have earned the title with a strike and count in the 10th frame. His first shot broke squarely into the pocket where all the pins disappeared at impact except the 10. It was a $7,000 pin as Couture picked up $16,000 and Berardi $9,000. Couture had edged Berardi from the top-seeded position the night before by eight pins. PBA Hall of Famer and Charter Member Carmen Salvino provided a dose of excitement and nostalgia. The 48-year-old Salvino rolled 649 for three games to finish third, defeating George Pappas and Jeff Bellinger before being halted by Berardi.
