PBA Hall of Famer Dave Soutar, who won his first PBA title in 1961 and hadn't competed at all on the 1981 Summer Tour, brought back memories of days gone by when he came from third place to win the $110,000 Aqua Fest-Mr. Gatti's Open in Austin, Texas. Soutar defeated Marshall Holman, 222-181, for the championship after Holman, for the second straight week, had run away from the field in match play, this time by 473 pins. The top seed was going for a Texas sweep, having won the Quaker State Open and the BPAA U.S. Open in January. In the championship game, Holman opened with a strike before suffering splits in two of his next three frames. Soutar jumped on the opening with strikes on six of his final eight attempts to secure the $15,000 top prize for his 16th PBA win.
