Mike Durbin won four straight matches, two of them by a single pin, to come away with a hard-fought victory in the $90,000 Sarasota Open. The 40-year-old Durbin earned his ninth PBA crown after defeating Marshall Holman, 202-196, in the championship match in which the lead exchanged hands six times. Durbin, finishing the match, clinched the title and the $11,000 top prize with a strike in the 10th frame against Holman, who had led the tournament by a season's high 560 pins through 42 games. The color commentator for ESPN when not competing in the finals, Durbin brought his TV record over that network to 10-0. He was on the brink of elimination throughout the Sarasota event but escaped with a 192-191 win over Dave Frame and a 237-236 decision against Jay Robinson in the opening matches.
