Tom Baker closed with eight straight strikes to top Mike Aulby, 247-205, in the inaugural $125,000 Pennzoil Open in Torrance, California. Top-seeded Baker trailed Aulby by one pin after four frames of the title match before going "off the sheet" with strikes to collect the $20,000 first prize and his second PBA title. His first had come one year earlier in the 1980 Northern California Open. Aulby had gotten to the championship game with a high scoring, 255-246, win over Guppy Troup in which the southpaw Aulby rolled strikes in eight of his first nine frames yet still had to convert a 3-5-6-9 spare in the l0th to win. Troup, coming back from a broken ankle during the Winter Tour, had topped Bill Spigner, 235-203, after Spigner had opened the finals with a 232-228 decision against Wayne Webb.
