Pete Couture pulled a PBA first when, after missing the cut to match play, still went on to win the season ending $85,000 Syracuse Open. Couture tied for 25th place after qualifying and defeated doubles partner Tommy Hudson for the right to serve as alternate. He then entered match play when one of the apparent finalists was disqualified and startlingly advanced to the top-seeded position on the strength of a 254 average for his last five matches. In the championship match, Couture was in a hole again, trailing Jeff Morin by 36 pins before making a dramatic line change in the seventh frame and tossing five straight strikes to top Morin, 213-200. It was Couture's second victory of the year and capped an outstanding Summer-Fall Tour in which he earned over $50,000.
