Joe Berardi notched his second PBA victory in five tournaments when he held off an ambitious challenge from Chuck Pierce, 213-198, in the $100,000 Kessler Open in Lansing, Mich. Pierce, the only bowler to master the lanes going into the title game, had risen from the fifth-seeded position by rolling 718 for three matches in defeating Dave Davis, Ralph Hartmann and Ed Ressler. Berardi took the lead in the match when he struck out in the 10th frame and claimed his fourth PBA championship when Pierce, needing a double to win, left a 10-pin on his first shot of the final frame. The 25-year-old Berardi moved among the top 15 on the yearly money standings with, the $13,000 first prize, despite limited tournament appearances.
