Bill Coleman overcame a near-disastrous ninth frame split to top leading money winner Wayne Webb and capture the $100,000 Columbia 300 Open in Sarasota, Fla. Coleman held a comfortable lead over the top-seeded Webb until leaving a 4-6-10 split in the ninth frame but recovered with three 10th frame strikes. That forced Webb to fire a double and nine in his final frame to overtake Coleman's 244, and a 10-pin on Webb's first try limited him to 225. His second PBA title gave Coleman $13,000 and regained for the 38-year-old right-hander a spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions. To get to the championship match, Coleman edged Joe Berardi, 203-196, in the semi-final game at Galaxy Lanes.
