Gillette Finds Canadian Edge

An inspired Kevin Gillette, competing in just his ninth PBA tournament, became the first rookie to win on the 1980 tour when he defeated Mike Aulby, 248-227, to capture the $90,000 Canadian Open.

Gillette, 29, began the final match with a spare and six straight strikes to take a 30-pin lead and was not seriously threatened by Aulby who had rolled to the title match by eliminating Ralph Hartmann and Paul Moser.

The event at Hamilton Mountain Bowl in Ontario marked the PBA's first venture into Canada in over a decade and awarded Gillette, a former automobile salesman from Florence, Ky., an $11,000 winner's check. For three-time PBA champ Aulby, it was the first runnerup finish of his career.
