Joe Berardi foiled Guppy Troup's plans to become the first back-to-back winner on the 1980 PBA tour when he outscored Troup, 223-198, to win the $85,000 Greater Buffalo Open. Berardi, who rolled a 300 game during last year's televised finals at Thruway Lanes and eventually finished third, was not to be denied this time as he routed Mark Roth and George Pappas to gain an opportunity to face the top-seeded Troup. A four-bagger starting from the third frame of the title match put the hard throwing Berardi in command for the $10,000 first prize and his third PBA championship. The 25-year-old Berardi rolled 649 for the three matches.
