Colorful Guppy Troup thwarted Earl Anthony's bid to win his fourth Waukegan title in the $90,000 SuperTouch Open. Anthony, who prevailed at Bertrand Lanes from 1975-1977, outlasted Troup for the top-seeded position but fell behind by 30 pins in the championship match when Troup opened with five strikes. Anthony pulled back to within nine pins later in the match but a disastrous 4-7-10 split in the ninth frame doomed the PBA's all-time leading money-winner and title-holder as Troup recorded a 245-222 decision. Troup had earlier defeated Gil Sliker after Sliker beat Tom Baker and Steve Martin during the stepladder finals.
