$85,000 TUCSON OPEN
Golden Pin Lanes, Tucson, - Ariz., Jul 18-22, 1980

Awesome Aulby

Mike Aulby fired his tournament average - 232 - in the title game, to trounce Sam Flanagan and win the $85,000 Tucson Open. Aulby, the 20-year-old reigning Sporting News PBA Rookie of the Year; buried the field by 599 pins going into the stepladder finals and watched as Flanagan, in just his fourth tournament since suffering a broken leg, slipped past Palmer Fallgren and Bob Handley to get a shot at the title. A string of strikes midway through the championship game insured Aulby's third PBA triumph and the $10,000 top prize as Flanagan tossed 188 and settled for $6.000.
