It was David against Goliath and in this case Goliath won. Steve Cook, who measures in at 6'6", 250 lbs., crushed his 5'4" opponent Paul Moser, 269-180, in the championship game to win the $90,000 U.S. Polychemical Open in Fresno, Calif. Moser had beaten PBA superstars Earl Anthony (in a two-frame roll-off) and Mark Roth to get the opportunity to face Cook but had to settle for his fifth career second-place finish when the 23-year-old top-seed let loose with a string of strikes that was not stopped until leaving a 7-pin in the ninth frame. Cook earned $11,000 for his second PBA crown.
