Smiling Alvin Lou, awarded the week before with the PBA Steve Nagy Sportsmanship award, showed that nice guys don't necessarily have mercy on the bowling lanes when he became the first bowler to win two tournaments on the 1980 tour in the $125,000 Miller High Life Open. Lou stunned challenging Mark Roth, 259-203, in the championship game after starting the match with a spare and seven strikes in a row. Roth started the finals in fourth place and ousted Paul Moser, Tom Baker and Dave Frame in building momentum for what he hoped would amount to his first championship of the year after two previous title match losses. Tour sophomore Lou, winner of the Rolaids Open earlier in 1980, pocketed $21,000 at Red Carpet CelebrityLanes in Milwaukee.
