Earl Anthony "nosed" past top-seeded Mark Roth, 268-242, to successfully defend his Long Island Open championship with the aid of a title-clinching 10th frame strike that made up in dramatics what it lacked in precision. After Roth, who rolled three 300 games during the week, appeared to have doomed himself with a 2-4-10 10th frame split, Anthony, needing a mark to win, nearly returned the favor when his final-frame shot hooked through the headpin. The 4-7-10 pins remained upright momentarily until some unusual and unexpected pin movement cleared the deck. The 41-year-old Anthony had rolled 257 in his semi-final game against Arnie Goldman to gain the opportunity to win his 32nd title and the $10,000 top prize.
