Kyle Shedd unleashed his alarmingly powerful hook ball for two strings of eight strikes and then cruised to his first PBA victory, 212-166, over leader Ed Wallace in the $100,000 Ford Open at Buckeye Lanes in North Olmsted, Ohio. Shedd, like Joe Hutchinson the week before, rallied from the third-seeded position, averaging 236 for three games, including triumphs over Bob Handley, 269-202, and Steve Martin, 257-239, to bowl his way to the title match. Along with the $15,000 first prize, Shedd, a sturdy 22-year-old right-hander from Downey, Calif., competing for less than nine months on the PBA tour, earned the use of a new Ford car for a year.
