Displaying the same aptitude for big money pressure bowling that made him the PBA National Champion in 1979, young Mike Aulby became the second bowler in two weeks to come from fifth place to a title in the $125,000 Midas Open. Aulby, the 19-year-old Rookie of the Year, handled the likes of Ernie Schlegel, George Pappas, Johnny Petraglia and Dave Davis with a 238 TV average at Brunswick Northwest Bowl in Palatine, Ill., to corner the $20,000 top prize. Top-seeded Davis, who lost, 224-188, in the finale, had compiled a record 770-pin first-place margin as he out-averaged the field by over 13 pins per game while posting a 21-3 match-play mark, including a 300 game.
