Unheralded Hugh Miller, who had won only $1,500 in 19 previous PBA tournaments, knocked off Tommy Kress, 238-226, to win the $100,000 Quaker State Open for a first prize 10 times his previous tour income. The 23-year-old southpaw coolly pumped home three ninth and 10th frame strikes to insure at least a tie against top-seeded Kress which turned into victory when Kress left a 10-pin on his first 10th frame shot. Prior to that, Miller had bested fellow southpaw Steve Cook after Cook had defeated Tom Baker. Baker had opened the finals with a 199-197 decision over Jim Winklepleck in the fourth annual Quaker State Championship at Forum Bowl in Grand Prairie, Texas.
