Gary Dickinson made his best shots when they counted the most as he toiled to his seventh PBA title in the $125,000 Miller High Life Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The 36-year-old Texan began the finals in the third-seeded position and routed Mike Hanes, 246-192. A strike on his final shot of the semi-final game gave Dickinson a thrilling 225-224 decision over Johnny Petraglia, preparing him for a 217-198 victory over top-seeded Ernie Schlegel. To insure the $21,000 first prize at Brunswick Wonderbowl Anaheim, Dickinson converted the 3-10 "baby split" twice late in the match. The championship represented the biggest prize won by Dickinson in his outstanding l0-year pro career, while Schlegel came away as runnerup for the fifth time.
