Mark Roth became the first bowler in PBA history to win $100,000 in three separate years as he topped Joe Berardi, 226-200, for the $11,000 first prize and his fifth victory of the year in the Kessler Classic in Indianapolis. Roth trailed early in the title game, once by 22 pins, before connecting on five strikes from the fifth through ninth frames. A seven-pin conversion in the 10th frame clinched the win for Roth, who had won the top-seeded position at Astro Bowl by 106 pins. Berardi, looking for his third title of the year, rolled 736 his first three matches in surging from fourth place to the championship match. His first victim was Art Trask, 257-212, followed by Gil Sliker, 237-151, and Dennis Lane, 242-227. It was the PBA's first tournament in the Indianapolis area since 1963.
