Beginning with nine strikes in the championship match, Fred Jaskie snapped out of a season-long slump with a 266-258 victory over Mark Roth for the Brunswick Regional Champions Classic title in Rochester, N.Y. The hometown winner of the 1978 Miller High Life Open in Milwaukee, Jaskie had not competed in a match play finals on the national tour all year until the event at Brunswick Olympic Lanes, where he won 18 of 24 matches to pace the field by 262 pins going into the finals broadcast by the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN). The victory meant continued exemption status for Jaskie and maintained his spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Roth, the defending champion, made a strong bid to retain his title as he moved from 23rd place to fifth in the last 16 games of match play, including a 300 game and 22 strikes in a row. Roth then rolled past Dale Glenn, Guppy Troup and Pete McCordic before being outgunned by Jaskie.
