Wayne Webb grabbed his second straight PBA title and third within nine months when he defeated two opponents in the finals of the Buffalo Open to become the first bowler to win back-to-back tournaments in 1979. Webb was seeded second into the finals and saw Joe Berardi nudge Rich Carrubba, 224-215, in the first match. Berardi then brought the fans at Thruway Lanes to their feet with 300-224 victory over Ed Ressler, in which the final solid strike was taped and rebroadcast for CBS-TV viewers along with the championship match. Berardi didn't make it to the title match after being stalled by Webb, 225-190, in the semi-final game. The 22-year-old righthander then proceeded to shoot past top-seeded Steve Westberg, 237-199, for the victory.
