Wayne Webb chased, caught and then hung on to defeat Jimmy Certain for the $8,000 first prize and his second PBA championship, the Waukegan Open. Starting the final round in fourth place, 240 pins off the pace, Webb charged into contention by winning his first six matches and entered the final game with a 15-pin edge over Certain. Also in contention was Pete McCordic, who rolled a 300 game with three games to go and stood third, 56 pins behind the lead. A four-bagger midway through the game by Webb put him in position of needing a spare in the 10th frame for the victory. Rolling the ball high on the head pin, Webb left the 3-6-10 combination and almost missed the spare as the ball hooked too much left. The pins fell, however, and Webb won the game and the championship, 212-203. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City | | Pins | | Avg | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Wayne Webb, Rehoboth, Mass. | | 9260 | | 220.4 | | 17-7-0 | | 510 | | 9770 | | $8,000 | | 2 | | Jimmy Certain, Huntsville, Ala. | | 9266 | | 220.6 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9716 | | 5,000 | | #3 | | Pete McCordic, Houston, Texas | | 9290 | | 221.1 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9665 | | 4,000 | | 4 | | Bill George, Citrus Hts., Calif | | 9152 | | 217.9 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9632 | | 3,500 | | 5 | | Gip Lentine, Rowland Hts., Calif. | | 9139 | | 217.5 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9589 | | 3,000 | | #6 | | Bill Spigner, Hamden, Conn. | | 9039 | | 215.2 | | 17-6-1 | | 525 | | 9564 | | 2,500 | | 7 | | Charlie Tapp, St. Paul, Minn. | | 9087 | | 216.3 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9537 | | 2,000 | | 8 | | Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, U.S.A. | | 9106 | | 216.8 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9496 | | 1,900 | | 9 | | John Weltzien, Huntley, Ill. | | 9072 | | 216.0 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9477 | | 1,800 | | 10 | | Eddie Ressler Jr., Bethlehem, Pa. | | 9167 | | 218.2 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9467 | | 1,700 | | 11 | | Tom Eder, N.
