After finishing no higher than 40th through the first eight tournaments in 1979, veteran Larry Laub took a week off to practice and saw immediate results as he scored his 11th PBA title in the Fair Lanes Open in Adelphi, Md. Laub did it the hard way, qualifying for match play in 24th (and last) position before compiling an 18-6 record to move to second behind leader Paul Moser. Laub then squeaked by Teata Semiz, 196-193, and was afforded a break in the championship match when Moser opened in the first and third frames. Laub breezed home by a 249-199 score, while Semiz finished third, George Pappas, fourth, and Keith Craycraft, fifth.
