Starting with nine strikes in the final game, Mark Roth avenged his loss two weeks earlier in the Quaker State Open to Marshall Holman by ripping Holman, 279-227, for his first title of the year in the Rolaids Open. Roth, who won the Rolaids title at Dick Weber Lanes in 1976, could not hold back top-seeded Holman in match play, but earned another shot at him by disposing of Dan Roche, 247-166, in the semi-final game. Roth's bid for a 300 game in the championship match was stopped by a 6-pin on a high hit in the 10th frame. It was Roth's 17th PBA title, worth $15,000.
