Defeated in the 1978 Quaker State championship by just three pins, Marshall Holman turned the tables on defending champ Mark Roth, upending the top-seeded Roth, 217-186, for the $15,000 first prize at Forum Lanes in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Quaker State title was Holman's eighth PBA crown and came after Marshall doubled in the 10th frame of the exciting semi-final game to edge veteran Dave Soutar, 230-224, after Soutar had forced the issue with four game-ending strikes. Soutar had earlier defeated Joe Berardi and Dick Ritger.
