Earl Gets Cooked

Steve Cook became the PBA's second new winner in as many weeks when he out-bowled two opponents for the $15,000 first prize in the $100,000 Ford Open in Alameda, Calif.

The 6-6, 240 lb. Cook, 22, used his remarkably powerful strike ball to tackle top-seeded Earl Anthony, 229-180, in the championship game. Cook had earlier defeated Butch Soper, 191-176, to earn his way to the title match.

A second year pro from Roseville, Calif., Cook's best previous finish was third in the 1978 Brunswick Regional Champions Classic.
