Mark Roth won his seventh title in 1978 by taking the $6,000 top prize. in the $60,000 New England Open at Lang's Bowlerama in Cranston, R.I. Roth thus tied Billy Hardwick (1969) and Earl Anthony (1976) for the most titles by one player in a single season. The $6,000 top prize also moved him closer to Anthony's single-season earnings record of $110,833. Roth began the final round by firing a three-game total of 801, capped off by a 300 game, and the rest of the field was chasing the 1977 Sporting News Player of the Year from there on.
