Steve Martin, 1977 Sporting News PBA Rookie of the Year, ignored the ever-present sophomore jinx by winning the $60,000 Sarasota Open, held for the second year at beautiful Galaxy Lanes. And the Kingsport, Tenn., pro did it despite winning just 10 and tying one of his 24 match games. Martin outclassed the field by averaging better than 220 per game while his closest pursuer, hometowner Steve Neff, averaged just 214. The victory was Martin's first on the PBA Tour and was made even sweeter because it was accomplished as his wife Kim, his parents and in-laws watched. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City | | Pins | | Avg | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Steve Martin, Kingsport, Tenn. | | 9263 | | 220.5 | | 10-13-1 | | 315 | | 9578 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Steve Neff, Sarasota, Fla. | | 9003 | | 214.3 | | 18-6-0 | | 540 | | 9543 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | K.
