Jeff Mattingly, who came agonizingly close to winning twice during the Winter Tour, finally broke through with a record-setting triumph in the $60,000 Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes. The husky Tacoma, Wash., pro cruised to a 663-pin margin over runnerup Jay Robinson and in the process shattered the record of 511 pins set in 1967 by Butch Gearhart. Mattingly, known to his friends as "The White Whale;" outaveraged the rest of the field by some 14 pins, and he won 19 of his 24 matches in the process. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City | | Pins | | Avg | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Jeff Mattingly, Tacoma, Wash. | | 9717 | | 231.3 | | 19-5-0 | | 570 | | 10287 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Jay Robinson, Van Nuys, Calif. | | 9144 | | 217.7 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9624 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Steve Jones, Kerrville, Texas | | 9057 | | 215.6 | | 15-7-2 | | 480 | | 9537 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore. | | 9097 | | 216.5 | | 10-10-4 | | 360 | | 9457 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Dennis Lane, Kingsport, Tenn. | | 9036 | | 215.1 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9456 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Wayne Zahn, Tempe, Ariz. | | 9112 | | 216.9 | | 10-13-1 | | 315 | | 9427 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Tommy Hudson, Akron | | 9031 | | 215.0 | | 13-11-0 | | 330 | | 9421 | | 1,650 | | 8 | | Rick Willard, Hayward, Calif. | | 8994 | | 214.1 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9384 | | 1,550 | | 9 | | Henry Gonzalez, Colo.
