PBA Hall-of-Famer Dave Davis showed the form that earned him a spot in that elite group a few months earlier when he scored a runaway victory in the $60,000 Fresno Open at Cedar Lanes. The lanky left-hander from Hackensack; N.J., averaged better than 220 for the 42-game test, four pins better than anyone else in the tournament. He finished with a 366-pin margin over young Ken Fernandez in the final standings. Davis also compiled the best match play record, winning 19 of 24 matches. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City | | Pins | | Avg | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Dave Davis, Hackensack, N.J. | | 9275 | | 220.8 | | 19-5-0 | | 570 | | 9845 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Ken Fernandez, Rogue River, Ore. | | 9074 | | 216.0 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9479 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Bill Spigner, Hamden, Conn. | | 9089 | | 216.4 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9449 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Steve Preston, Kokomo, Ind. | | 9005 | | 214.4 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9425 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Bus Oswalt, Muncie, Ind. | | 8967 | | 213.5 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9417 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Neil Burton, St. Louis | | 8962 | | 213.3 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9397 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Nelson Burton, Jr., St. Louis | | 8957 | | 213.2 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9377 | | 1,650 | | 8 | | Ed Dolfay, Seattle, Wash. | | 8989 | | 214.0 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9364 | | 1,500 | | 9 | | Pete Couture, Windsor Lakes, Conn. | | 8971 | | 213.5 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9301 | | 1,450 | | 10 | | Mark Roth, North Arlington, N.J. | | 8846 | | 210.6 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9296 | | 1,400 | | 11 | | Jay Robinson, Van Nuys, Calif. | | 8796 | | 209.4 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9246 | | 1,350 | | 12 | | Charlie Venable, Brooklyn, N.Y. | | 8826 | | 210.1 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9156 | | 1,300 | | 13 | | Wayne Chester, San Mateo, Calif. | | 8788 | | 209.2 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9148 | | 1,250 | | 14 | | George Pappas, Charlotte, N.C. | | 8836 | | 210.3 | | 9-15-0 | | 270 | | 9106 | | 1,200 | | 15 | | Randy Neal, El Segundo, Calif. | | 8794 | | 209.3 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9094 | | 1,150 | | 16 | | Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore. | | 8689 | | 206.8 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9079 | | 1,100 | | 17 | | Matt Surina, Longview, Wash. | | 8763 | | 208.6 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9063 | | 1,050 | | 18 | | Henry Gonzalez, Colo.
