Nelson Burton Jr., defeated four opponents to win the $10,000 first prize in the BPAA U.S. Open, held for the second straight year at Brunswick Friendly Lanes in Greensboro, N.C.

Burton defeated league entry Ron Bell, Akron, 228-198, Fred Conner, Mar Vista, Calif., 216-193, and Dave Kappel, Chicago, 225-155, to earn a shot at tournament leader Jeff Mattingly, Tacoma.

Mattingly missed a four-pin in the third frame of the match, which turned out to be fatal, as Burton nosed out Mattingly. 204-201, when the burly Tacoman failed to double in the 10th frame.
