Marshall Holman avenged his defeat in this tournament in 1977 when he won the $12,000 first prize in the 1978 Ford Open. In 1977, Holman advanced to the championship game from the No. 5 position only to lose the title to young Steve Jones. The 1978 edition of the Ford Open was highlighted by Holman's clutch performance in the 10th frame when he tossed a strike that allowed him to defeat Jimmy Certain, 221-218, for the title, his sixth on the PBA Tour. Certain, seeded third, defeated Craig Mueller, 231-214, and George Pappas, 195-192, to move into the title game against Holman.
