Joe Hutchinson turned the Halloween weekend into a personal treat as he won the $60,000 Northern Ohio Open for his first PBA victory. Hutchinson, whose best previous finish was seventh in the 1977 PBA National Championship, finished with a commanding 213-pin margin over runnerup Joe Berardi. Almost the entire tournament centered on Hutchinson and Berardi, who was seeking his first title also. Berardi led after 18 games of qualifying before Hutchinson took over the lead in the match play finals and amassed an 18-5-1 won-lost record to roll away from the field. Hutchinson, who rolled a 300 en route to victory, won $6,000. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | #1 | | Joe Hutchinson, Scranton, Pa. | | 9475 | | 18-5-1 | | 555 | | 10030 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Joe Berardi, Pearl River, N.Y. | | 9367 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9817 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Bill Straub, Lincoln, Neb. | | 9225 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9705 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Earl Anthony, Tacoma, Wash. | | 9354 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9684 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Mark Roth, Staten Island, N.Y. | | 9247 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9577 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Bob Goike, Detroit | | 9150 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9570 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Bus Oswalt, Muncie, Ind. | | 9105 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9555 | | 1,600 | | 8 | | Steve Jones, Independence, Mo. | | 9147 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9537 | | 1,400 | | 9 | | Pete Couture, Windsor, Conn. | | 9126 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9516 | | 1,350 | | 10 | | Fred Jaskie,- Greendale, Wisc. | | 9090 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9510 | | 1,300 | | 11 | | Jimmy Certain, Huntsville, Ala. | | 9174 | | i1-13-0 | | 330 | | 9504 | | 1,250 | | 12 | | Lee Taylor, San Diego | | 9053 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9503 | | 1,200 | | 13 | | Dennis Lane, Kingsport, Tenn. | | 9232 | | 8-16-0 | | 240 | | 9472 | | 1,150 | | 14 | | Rick Minier, Portland | | 9084 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9444 | | 1,100 | | 15 | | Dave Frame, Baldwin, Pk., Calif. | | 9075 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9405 | | 1,050 | | 16 | | Jeff Mattingly, Tacoma, Wash. | | 8991 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9381 | | 1,000 | | 17 | | Roy Buckley, Columbus, Ohio | | 8882 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9302 | | 950 | | 18 | | Joe Nuzzo, Youngstown, Ohio | | 8875 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9235 | | 900 | | 19 | | Mike Berlin, Muscatine, Iowa | | 8832 | | 12-i1-1 | | 375 | | 9207 | | 850 | | 20 | | Allie Clarke, Ravenna.
