Spurred on by a partisan crowd, Bill Spigner steamed to victory in the $60,000 New England Open to win his first title. The bespectacled Spigner averaged almost 240 in each of his 16 match play games on the final day of competition to register an impressive 361-pin victory over Mark Roth. Spigner, who began the day in fifth place, nearly 200 pins behind then leader Steve Neff, dropped only two contests in the concluding sessions. In winning first place money of $6,000, Spigner became the third consecutive first-time champion on the tour. Tom Wright won the Buffalo Open two weeks earlier and Steve Westberg the Great Adventure Open one week earlier. Neff tumbled to fourth while Dennis Lane was third. Ed Jablonski rolled the tourney's only 300 game. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Bill Spigner, Hamden, Conn. | | 9715 | | 20-4-0 | | 600 | | 10315 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Mark Roth, Staten Island, N.Y. | | 9579 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9954 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Dennis Lane, Kingsport, Tenn. | | 9464 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9914 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Steve Neff, Sarasota | | 9486 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9816 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore. | | 9417 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9747 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Mike Durbin, Chagrin Falls, Ohio | | 9397 | | 11-12-1 | | 345 | | 9742 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Bobby Fenton, Cucamonga, Calif. | | 9314 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9719 | | 1,600 | | 8 | | Eddie Ressler, Allentown, Pa. | | 9262 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9697 | | 1,450 | | 9 | | Paul Colwell, Tucson | | 9310 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9670 | | 1,350 | | 10 | | John Petraglia, Staten Island | | 9258 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9663 | | 1,300 | | 11 | | Tommy Hudson, Akron, Ohio | | 9360 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9660 | | 1,250 | | 12 | | Pete Couture, Windsor, Conn. | | 9293 | | 11-12-1 | | 345 | | 9638 | | 1,200 | | 13 | | Craig Mueller, Union, N.J. | | 9245 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9620 | | 1,150 | | 14 | | Dale Glenn, Glendale, Calif. | | 9191 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9596 | | 1,100 | | 15 | | Jimmy Certain, Huntsville, Ala. | | 9181 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9571 | | 1,050 | | 16 | | Larry Laub, San Francisco | | 9131 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9536 | | 1,000 | | 17 | | Joe Nuzzo, Youngstown, Ohio | | 9179 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9509 | | 950 | | 18 | | Gil Sliker, Washington, N.J. | | 9148 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9508 | | 900 | | 19 | | Wayne Graham, Miami | | 9195 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9495 | | 850 | | 20 | | Fred Conner, Mar Vista, Calif. | | 9133 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9463 | | 800 | | 21 | | Wendell Davis, Johnson City, Tenn. | | 9149 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9449 | | 750 | | 22 | | Gary Dickinson, Ft.
