After performing with little distinction in his first four years on the tour, Tom Wright came through in the clutch to win his first title, the $60,000 Buffalo Open. With the final position round game remaining, the blond righthander owned a 27-pin lead over rookie Craig Cutsor. Wright jumped to a quick 22-pin lead early in the match and was never threatened after that, eventually posting a 233-214 victory for an edge of 75 pins at the finish. "I'd been bowling so poorly all Summer that I had made up my mind before Buffalo began that I was going home to work on my game," Wright said. "I'm glad I changed my mind at the last minute." In 16th place at the end of qualifying, Wright advanced to sixth after the opening block of match play, fourth after the second session, then broke into the lead with two games remaining. Joe Berardi was third followed by Bus Oswalt and Todd Strebel. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Tom Wright, Millbrae, Calif. | | 8893 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9373 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Craig Cutsor, Whittier, Calif. | | 8757 | | 18-6-0 | | 540 | | 9297 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Joe Berardi, New York, N.Y. | | 8870 | | 12-10-2 | | 390 | | 9260 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Bus Oswalt, Muncie, Ind. | | 8862 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9237 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Todd Strebel, Monroe, N.Y. | | 8776 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9181 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Mike Durbin.
