George Pappas thwarted Mark Roth's bid to rewrite the PBA record books when he eked out a two-pin victory in the $60,000 Tucson Open. Seeking an unprecedented fourth straight victory, Roth entered the position round game 44 pins behind the leader Pappas. And although Roth defeated Pappas, 235-223, in the final contest, he fell short of another victory when he failed to strike on his final ball. It was Pappas' fifth career title and earned him the $6,000 top prize. Pappas didn't move into the top position until only one game remained in the 42-game contest. He supplanted Dennis Lane, the leader until that point, then protected the margin in the final game. Roth finished second, giving him a string of fourth, first, first, first and second finishes in five weeks, while Marshall Holman was third, Lane fourth and Tommy Hudson fifth. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | George Pappas, Charlotte, N.C. | | 9193 | | 17-7-0 | | 510 | | 9703 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Mark Roth, Staten Island, N.Y. | | 9146 | | 18-5-1 | | 555 | | 9701 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore. | | 9234 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9624 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Dennis Lane, Kingsport, Tenn. | | 9134 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9584 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Tommy Hudson, Akron, Ohio | | 9097 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9532 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Les Zikes, Palatine, Ill. | | 9072 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9447 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Randy Lightfoot, St. Charles, Mo. | | 9078 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9408 | | 1,600 | | 8 | | Dale Glenn, Glendale, Calif. | | 8961 | | 13-10-1 | | 405 | | 9366 | | 1,480 | | 9 | | Pete McCordic, Houston | | 8919 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9279 | | 1,380 | | 10 | | Rick Minier, Akron, Ohio | | 8902 | | 12-11-1 | | 375 | | 9277 | | 1,300 | | 11 | | Jimmy Certain, Huntsville, Ala. | | 8933 | | 10-13-1 | | 315 | | 9248 | | 1,250 | | 12 | | Frank Ellenburg, Mesa, Ariz. | | 8843 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9233 | | 1,200 | | 13 | | Rich Carrubba, Hayward, Calif. | | 8868 | | 11-11-2 | | 360 | | 9228 | | 1,150 | | 14 | | Cliff McNealy, San Lorenzo, Calif. | | 8893 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 9223 | | 1,100 | | 15 | | Matt Surina, Longview, Wash. | | 8785 | | 13-9-2 | | 420 | | 9205 | | 1,050 | | 16 | | Mike Durbin, Chagrin Falls, Ohio | | 8798 | | 12-10-2 | | 390 | | 9188 | | 1,000 | | 17 | | Dan Roche, Downey, Calif. | | 8883 | | 8-16-0 | | 240 | | 9123 | | 950 | | 18 | | Bill Straub, Lincoln, Neb. | | 8802 | | 9-14-1 | | 285 | | 9087 | | 900 | | 19 | | Jim Godman, Lorain, Ohio | | 8762 | | 10-13-1 | | 315 | | 9077 | | 850 | | 20 | | Neil Burton, St. Louis | | 8825 | | 7-16-1 | | 225 | | 9050 | | 800 | | 21 | | Curt Schmidt, Ft.
