Mark Roth tied a PBA record when he won the $60,000 Southern California Open for his third straight title. Roth won the $6,000 top prize in "striking" fashion as he struck out in the 10th frame of the position game against local favorite Bobby Fliegman. The trio of strikes enabled Roth to tie Fliegman, 214-214, and protect a slim 25-pin lead. Roth thus joined Dick Weber and Johnny Petraglia as the only three-in-a-row champions since the PBA was formed in 1959. Weber accomplished the feat in 1961 while Petraglia did it 10 years later. Roth's other titles came in the PBA Doubles Classic and Fresno Open. The righthanded Roth held a comfortable lead going into the final eight-game block but won only three of his first seven games while Fliegman steadily closed in. Fliegman finished the position round first, then watched helplessly as Roth struck out to tie and gain the 15 bonus pins he needed for the victory. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Mark Roth, Staten Island, N.Y. | | 9391 | | 14-8-2 | | 450 | | 9841 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Bobby Fliegman, Torrance, Calif. | | 9291 | | 17-6-1 | | 525 | | 9816 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Dan Roche, Downey, Calif. | | 9049 | | 15-7-2 | | 480 | | 9529 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Les Zikes, Palatine, Ill. | | 9079 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9514 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Cliff McNealy, San Lorenzo, Calif. | | 8966 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9446 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Keith Craycraft, N.
