Competing in only his second tournament since joining the tour full-time, Steve Jones derailed a streaking Marshall Holman to win the $75,000 Ford Open for his first title. Jones defeated Holman, 244-210, in the title game to capture the $8,000 top prize. The fifth-seeded Holman started his march to the title game by defeating Palmer Fallgren, 244-222. He then brushed aside George Pappas, 278-226, and Mark Roth, 239-231. The championship match was a thriller. A 7-10 split dropped Jones 23 pins off the pace after three frames, but the slender youngster bounced back with six straight strikes to emerge the winner. Surprisingly, Jones got into the tournament by finishing second in the Pro Tour Qualifier. Glen Carlson and Roy Buckley rolled perfect games.
