Louie Moore held off a late challenge by veteran Bill Beach to capture the $6,000 first prize in the $60,000 Syracuse Open bowling tournament. For the Columbus, Ohio pro, the victory was the third of his PBA career and his second of 1976. Moore had won the title earlier in the year at New Orleans, La. Except for three games during the first match play session, when he relinquished the lead to Carmen Salvino, Chicago, Ill., Moore occupied the top rung. But he never could pull away to a comfortable lead. Beach stayed within striking distance of Moore during the final seven games, virtually matching him pin for pin, win for win. Then, with one game to go, he closed to within 59 pins. Beach's luck, however, ran out in the climactic game. He never struck until the final ball of the game and Moore had a 213-176 victory to clinch the title. 42-GAME TOTALS | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Louie Moore, Columbus, Ohio | | 9158 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9578 | | $6,000 | | 2 | | Bill Beach, Sharon, Pa. | | 8987 | | 15-8-1 | | 465 | | 9452 | | 3,500 | | 3 | | Carmen Salvino, Chicago, Ill | | 8937 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9357 | | 3,000 | | 4 | | Jay Robinson, Los Angeles, Calif. | | 8822 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9257 | | 2,500 | | 5 | | Paul Moser, Medford, Mass. | | 8767 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9247 | | 2,000 | | 6 | | Dave Davis, Atlanta, Ga. | | 8752 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9202 | | 1,800 | | 7 | | Ed Ressler Jr., Allentown, Pa. | | 8725 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9175 | | 1,600 | | 8 | | Tom Baker, Buffalo, N.Y. | | 8710 | | 14-9-1 | | 435 | | 9145 | | 1,400 | | 9 | | Gil Sliker, Washington, N.J. | | 8722 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9142 | | 1,350 | | 10 | | Tommy Hudson, Akron, Ohio | | 8772 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9132 | | 1,300 | | 11 | | Jim Certain, Huntsville, Ala. | | 8932 | | 6-18-0 | | 180 | | 9112 | | 1,250 | | 12 | | John Wilcox, Montoursville, Pa. | | 8764 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9064 | | 1,200 | | 13 | | Earl Anthony, Tacoma, Wash. | | 8689 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9049 | | 1,150 | | 14 | | Mike Durbin, Chagrin Falls, Ohio | | 8720 | | 10-13-1 | | 315 | | 9035 | | 1,100 | | 15 | | Tom Wright, Millbrae, Calif. | | 8659 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 8989 | | 1,050 | | 16 | | Dan Roche, Downey, Calif. | | 8616 | | 11-13-0 | | 330 | | 8946 | | 1,000 | | 17 | | John Petraglia, Staten Island, N.Y. | | 8639 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 8939 | | 950 | | 18 | | Jeff Mattingly, Tacoma, Wash. | | 8600 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 8900 | | 900 | | 19 | | Bobby Jacks, New Orleans, La. | | 8518 | | 12-1-1 | | 375 | | 8893 | | 850 | | 20 | | Les Richmond.
